Abstract

Manufacturing companies currently use linear production systems, which are detrimental to sustainability in the short, medium, and long term. In this context, there is a need for means of transitioning from linear to circular economies that adhere to more environmentally friendly operating practices. This research was undertaken with the objective of designing an agent-based model for establishing a symbiotic system in manufacturing companies. The methodology was grounded in scientific principles, enabling a concrete and useful procedure carried out in a clear manner. The process began with the real-world system, moving to a conceptual model through abstraction, followed by the creation of an analytical model through formalization, and finally the implementation of a computational model; Subsequently, the validation of this model will enable future research related to the creation of a model or, alternatively, the continuation of research milestones by expanding the database of this study.

Sergio Antonio Mena-Mejía, Center for Research and Innovation in Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Santa Elena Peninsula State University (UPSE), Ecuador; Directorate General for Intellectual Creation, Postgraduate Studies, Universidad Nacional Experimental Sur del Lago Jesús María Semprum (UNESUR), Venezuela

PhD candidate in Management Sciences, specializing in Local and Border Development, with a strong academic background that includes a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering, specializing in Production and Services Planning and Control. He holds a degree in Industrial Engineering and currently works as a full-time Research Professor at the Universidad Estatal Península de Santa Elena (UPSE). He has extensive experience as a manuscript reviewer for national and international scientific journals, and his career has led him to participate as a speaker at various international conferences, standing out in topics related to innovation and engineering.

A distinguished business consultant, academic, and researcher, and a recognized reference in eco-innovation, engineering, and sustainable development. He holds a Ph.D. in Management Sciences, specializing in Local and Border Development, and is currently a Ph.D. candidate in Logistics and Supply Chain Management. His interdisciplinary academic background includes Master’s degrees in Industrial Engineering and Business Management, in addition to degrees in Industrial Engineering and Commercial Engineering.

He serves as Full Professor, Researcher, and Research Coordinator for the Industrial Engineering Program at the Universidad Estatal Península de Santa Elena (UPSE). He holds international iPEER accreditation and is classified as an “Investigador Agregado 2” (Associate Researcher Level 2).

He has extensive experience in teaching, research, and thesis supervision at master’s and doctoral levels in national and international universities. He is a member of scientific and editorial committees of academic journals, an international conference speaker, and the author of more than 90 indexed scientific publications, as well as several books on sustainability, eco-innovation, and engineering.

Isabel Del Roció Balón-Ramos, Center for Research and Innovation in Industrial Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Sciences, Santa Elena Peninsula State University (UPSE), Ecuador

Master’s degree in Integrated Management Systems and Industrial Engineering, with 24 years of experience in university teaching, focused on the training of professionals in the field of Industrial Engineering. She currently serves as Director of the Industrial Engineering Program and the Industrial Safety Program at the Faculty of Engineering Sciences of the Universidad Estatal Península de Santa Elena (UPSE), leading academic and administrative processes aimed at institutional strengthening and continuous improvement in higher education.

In the field of research, she has actively contributed as a thesis supervisor and participant in academic projects, as well as through the publication of scientific articles, book chapters, and other intellectual outputs in her area of specialization. She has also participated as a speaker at national and international academic events.

Her teaching practice is characterized by strong engagement with the productive sector, integrating course development with real-world projects and coordinating professional internships that link academic training with the needs of the business environment.
